Our wild isles habitats are spectacular but under enormous threat

From rugged coastlines to flower meadows and ancient woodlands, our wild isles are made up of spectacular and diverse habitats. Each is unique and vitally important to all of us and the species that call them home.

But the UK is now one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world and our precious habitats are under enormous threat. Learn more about them and what we can all do to protect and restore these habitats.

Woodlands

Home to thousands of species and important for carbon storage, woodlands are our richest and most diverse habitat. We urgently need to preserve and restore them.

Grasslands

True grassland habitats like wildflower meadows and chalk downland are havens for wildlife. But they’re fast disappearing and need our help before they’re gone forever.

Freshwater

Fresh water is one of our most precious natural resources but fewer than half of the UK’s rivers and lakes are in good health. If we don’t take action, they may never recover.

Oceans

We’re surrounded by over 30,000km of coastline and some of the most abundant waters on the planet. We must protect our ocean habitats from an uncertain future.
